Uber, Lyft receive ‘F’ from Better Business Bureau

San Francisco-based rideshare startupsLyft Inc. and Uber Technologies Inc. have both received an F rating with the Better Business Bureau, according to information released this week by the organization.

The organization, which aims to be an unbiased resource for consumers, rates services on a scale of A+ to F.

Uber’s failing grade is based on 91 complaints the agency has received about the service over the last three years.

« Consumer complaints allege misunderstanding Uber Technologies’ pricing, being misinformed about the overall cost of the services rendered, and not being made aware of ‘surge pricing,’ or temporary increases in the company’s charges, » the BBB states on its website.

According to the BBB, some consumers claim they were told the final cost of the transportation service Uber provided « only to be subsequently charged a substantially larger amount. »

« Uber has revolutionized riders’ ability to provide feedback in cities like San Francisco where consumers filed nearly 2,000 unanswered complaints against taxi in one year alone, » Uber spokesman Taylor Bennet said in a statement. « Uber’s direct channel for two-way feedback is regularly reviewed and acted on to ensure a high-quality experience. The fact is that consumers in 220 cities around the world have made their opinion known by taking millions of rides with Uber. »

Lyft had a total of five complaints through the BBB. Because the company only responded to two of the BBB filed complaints, the organization said it lowered Lyft’s rating.

Yellow Cab in San Franciso, like Lyft, also received an F with a total of five complaints.Pittsburgh Transportation Group, which runs Yellow Cab in Pittsburgh, has a B+ on the site and a total of five complaints.

A spokeswoman for Lyft was not immediately available for comment.
